1. Introduction

Lesson Assist (Pty) Ltd ("Lesson Assist", "we", "our" or "us") respects your privacy and is committed to protecting the personal information of parents, legal guardians and learners who use our platform.

This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, how we keep it safe, and your rights under applicable South African law, including the Protection of Personal Information Act 4 of 2013 (POPIA).

By using the Lesson Assist website or platform, you agree to the terms of this Privacy Policy.

2. Information We Collect

We may collect the following types of information:

  • Account information: parent or guardian name, email address, mobile number and payment details when you register or preorder.
  • Learner information: first name, grade and learning progress data necessary to provide the revision service.
  • Audio recordings: our Teach Back activity asks your child to explain a concept back in their own words. This can be done by speaking or by typing. Where you choose to speak, we record short audio clips of those explanations so feedback can be given on how well the concept has landed. Speaking is optional — your child can type their Teach Back answer instead, and choosing to type does not limit access to any lesson, report or feature. Teach Back audio may or may not be used to help train the systems behind our feedback tools; we have not committed either way, and we will update this policy if that changes.
  • Usage information: pages visited, lessons completed, assessment results, device type and browser information.
  • Marketing information: how you heard about Lesson Assist, campaign referrals and UTM tracking data used to measure the effectiveness of our marketing.

3. How We Use Your Information

We use your information to:

  • create and manage your account and learner profiles;
  • provide access to lessons, assessments and progress tracking;
  • review Teach Back answers, whether spoken or typed, so your child gets feedback on how well a concept has landed;
  • process payments and manage subscriptions;
  • communicate with you about your account, launch updates and product news;
  • improve our platform, content and user experience;
  • comply with legal and regulatory requirements; and
  • prevent fraud, abuse and security incidents.

4. How We Share Your Information

We do not sell your personal information. We only share information with trusted service providers who help us operate the platform, such as:

  • cloud hosting and database providers;
  • payment processors;
  • email and communication services; and
  • analytics providers.

All service providers are contractually bound to keep your information secure and to use it only for the purposes we specify.

5. Data Storage and Security

We store data on secure cloud infrastructure with industry-standard encryption, access controls and regular security monitoring. Access to personal information is limited to authorised personnel who need it to perform their jobs.

While we take reasonable steps to protect your information, no online service can guarantee absolute security.

6. Cookies and Tracking

We use cookies and similar technologies to understand how visitors use our website, remember your preferences and measure the performance of marketing campaigns. You can disable cookies in your browser settings, although some features may not work as intended.

7. Your Rights

Under POPIA and other applicable laws, you have the right to:

  • access the personal information we hold about you;
  • request correction of inaccurate or outdated information;
  • object to the processing of your information in certain circumstances;
  • request deletion of your personal information, where lawful; and
  • lodge a complaint with the Information Regulator if you believe your rights have been violated.

WhatsApp and email contact, and how to opt out

We only contact you by email or WhatsApp about your enquiry and our updates if you tick the optional box on our contact form saying you are happy for us to do so. That box is never ticked for you, and leaving it unticked does not affect our reply to your question. We record your choice, the exact wording you agreed to and the date and time you agreed.

You can opt out at any time. Send us a WhatsApp message saying "OPT OUT", or email hello@lessonassist.co.za with "OPT OUT". We will remove your details from our contact database and you will not receive any further contact from us.

8. Children's Privacy

Lesson Assist is designed for learners under the supervision of a parent or legal guardian. We do not knowingly collect personal information directly from children without parental consent. Accounts are created and managed by the parent or guardian.

9. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. The latest version will always be available on our website with the effective date at the top.
